Mulberry district beautification set for Saturday - WSFA.com: News ...

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Clean City Commission is partnering with local businesses for a beautification project this weekend in Montgomery's Mulberry Street Business District.

Volunteers will meet at Al's Flowers at 1725 Carter Hill Road to begin the clean-up this Saturday, April 28th, from 8:00 a.m. –11:00 a.m. They will be picking up litter, mowing, edging, trimming weeds and planting flower beds.

Area businesses have donated money to purchase two new custom iron signs to designate the area. Volunteers will build planters around the new signs.

"The Mulberry Street district is a beautiful area," said MCCC Director Susan Carmichael. "We want to enhance it with signs, flowers and a canopy of trees."

The MCCC is currently raising money to purchase more than 100 trees.

"We have raised several thousand dollars to purchase oak trees, red buds and crepe myrtles, which will be planted in early November when conditions are favorable," said Carmichael.

The City's urban forester will oversee the planting of the trees.

Depending on the number of volunteers on Saturday morning, MCCC hopes to cover all of Mulberry Street between the I-85 ramp and Carter Hill Road and the surrounding streets. Three groups from Maxwell Air Force Base, a sorority and fraternity from Alabama State University, a troop of boy scouts and several individuals have already volunteered for the event.

If you are interested in being a part of this beautification project, please contact the Montgomery Clean City Commission at (334) 625-2175.
